Background
- Biographical / Historical:
In 1915, Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, 1889-1951, started reporting for the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, based in Girard, Kansas. In 1921, he bought the newspaper, changed the name to Haldeman-Julius Weekly, and developed Haldeman-Julius Publications, which published new and classic books, including the Little Blue Book series of classics in Western thought and literature.
Maud Helena Davis, 1868-1925, was the wife of political activist and cartoonist Ryan Walker, 1870-1932, who published several cartoons in Appeal to Reason.
Sarah Alice (Addams) Haldeman, 1853-1915, philanthropist and banker, was the sister of social activist Jane Addams, 1860-1935, and the mother of Emanuel Haldeman-Julius' wife, Anna Marcet Haldeman-Julius, 1887-1941.
Louis Kopelin (a.k.a. Lewis Copeland), 1887-1949, editor, worked at Appeal to Reason from 1913 to 1921.
Frank P. O'Hare, 1877-1960, political activist, journalist, and newspaper editor, studied at the International School of Socialist Economy, which was connected to Appeal to Reason, in 1901.
Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, novelist, had a long relationship with Appeal to Reason, as his novel The Jungle was first published serially in the newspaper in 1905. Sinclair became good friends with Haldeman-Julius and went on to publish several novels with Haldeman-Julius Publications.
Fred D. Warren, 1872-1959, worked for Appeal to Reason from 1900 to 1913. As managing editor, he commissioned Upton Sinclair to write about the Chicago meatpacking industry in 1904; this work became Sinclair's novel The Jungle.
Walter H. Wayland, 1884-1980, was the son of Julius A. Wayland, 1854-1912, who founded Appeal to Reason in 1895. He ran the newspaper briefly after his father's death in 1912.
