Background

Biographical / Historical:

Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, was a prolific American novelist and polemicist for socialism, health, temperance, free speech, and workers' rights, among other causes. He published several pieces with the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason and its replacement, Haldeman-Julius Publications. As a result, he corresponded with Appeal to Reason staff members Walter H. Wayland, 1884-1980, who ran the newspaper briefly after the death of his father, Appeal to Reason founder Julius A. Wayland, 1854-1912, and Louis Kopelin (a.k.a. Lewis Copeland), 1887-1949, who worked at the newspaper from 1913 to 1921.

Scope and Content:

The Haldeman mss. III, 1915-1918, consists primarily of correspondence of Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, novelist, and Appeal to Reason staff members Louis Kopelin, 1887-1949, and Walter H. Wayland, 1884-1980. The letters relate to the publication of materials in Appeal to Reason, the possible serialization of Sinclair's King Coal, an attempt by Sinclair to get Appeal to Reason to take over a motion picture of his, The Jungle, and a suggestion that Appeal to Reason use novels of Sinclair as premiums for subscriptions.

Included in the collection are a letter from Sinclair to Woodrow Wilson, October 22, 1917; a letter from Sinclair to Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, August 1, 1918; undated articles by Sinclair entitled "The Hidden Woman of Monticello: A Study in Yellow Journalism," "King Coal: A Novel and an Offer," and "Scenario of 'Colorado'" ; and a carbon copy of "Democratic Defense: A Practical Program for Socialism," signed by William James Ghent, Charmian (Kittredge) London, Charles Edward Russell, Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, Upton Beall Sinclair, George Sterling, James Graham Phelps Stokes, and William English Walling.
