Jesse William Handley, 1803-1889, was born in Georgia on 10 August 1803. He married Nancy Harris, 1810-1870, of Pennsylvania, in Ohio on 13 November 1833. The couple had eight children: Caroline, Rosanna, James, Rebecca, William, Emily, Nancy, and Sarah. The family moved to White Oak Springs, Buckhorn Township, in Brown County, Illinois, in 1850. The Handleys' son James, 1840-1863, fought in Missouri and Mississippi during the Civil War with the 99th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (1862-1863). Their son William, 1845-1918, married Ayra Nations, 1859-1933, in Adams, Illinois, on 13 March 1884.

Scope and Content:

The Handley mss., 1862-1908, consists of the correspondence and papers of the Jesse Handley family of Oak Springs, Buckhorn Township, Brown County, Illinois. Jesse's son James was mustered with the 99th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served 1862-1863 in Missouri and Mississippi. Present here are twelve letters he wrote home to his father, one he wrote to his brother William, and one that Jesse wrote to James. Also present is a letter from one of James' fellow soldiers to Jesse Handley.

The later materials relate primarily to William and his wife, the former Ayra Nations. Included are three letters from Jacob Hughes to Ayra describing his life in Yolo County, California, 1882-1883.

Completing the collection are a printed Bible tract by Wesleyan minister Mark Guy Pearse, 1842-1930, titled The Victory of Trust, and a lock of dark brown hair.
