Background

Biographical / Historical:

Mary "Mollie" Atkinson (Greenhalgh) Hardwick, 1916-2003, was born in Prestwich, England, on 7 March 1916. She worked as a private secretary at the British Broadcasting Company, became a BBC radio announcer in 1940, and joined the company's drama department in 1946. A prolific writer, she wrote a series of detective novels following her character Doran Fairweather and created several books based on television series, including Upstairs, Downstairs; Juliet Bravo; and The Duchess of Duke Street. In 1961, she married John Michael Drinkrow Hardwick (1924-1991), who had been born in Leeds, England, on 10 September 1924. The couple wrote several books and plays about Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens. Michael Hardwick also wrote much of the Sherlock Holmes BBC Radio Series that ran from 1952 to 1969. He died on 4 March 1991, and Mollie Hardwick died on 13 December 2003.

Scope and Content:

The Hardwick mss., 1970-1999, consists of the writings of authors Michael Hardwick, 1924-1991, and Mollie (Greenhalgh) Hardwick. The following titles are present in the collection: Charles Dickens: Teller of Tales, a series of three BBC programs by Mollie and Michael Hardwick; the Charles Dickens Quiz Book, compiled by Michael and Mollie Hardwick; The Duchess of Duke Street by Mollie Hardwick (3 vols.); and Upstairs, Downstairs, a novelization of the BBC television series by Mollie Hardwick. All of the manuscripts are typescripts with numerous autograph changes, additions, corrections, et cetera, all on the verso of various BBC mimeo television scripts, and all are undated but appeared either on television or in print during the early to mid 1970s.
