Russell Benjamin Harrison, 1854-1936, was born on 12 August 1854 in Oxford, Ohio, to U.S. President Benjamin Harrison, 1833-1901, and his wife, Caroline Lavinia Scott, 1832-1892. In 1877, Harrison graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he studied mining and engineering. He worked as an engineer for the Citizens' Gas Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, for a year after graduating and then became the superintendent of the U.S. Assay office in Helena, Montana. In 1886, he started working at Journal Publishing Company in Helena, and in 1889 he moved to New York City to work for Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper and Judge. In the 1890s, Harrison served in several different capacities at the Aransas Harbor City & Improvement Company, the Three Americas Company, the Ceylon Planters' Tea Company, and elsewhere, to promote commerce and travel. He fought in the Spanish-American War and then was part of the military department which governed Puerto Rico until its transfer to civil authorities; he was discharged on 1 December 1900. In 1901, Harrison was admitted to the Indiana bar and set up a practice in Indianapolis. He served in the Indiana legislature from 1921 to 1927. He died in Indianapolis, Indiana, on 13 December 1936.
