John Jay Janney, 1812-1907, was an Ohio politician, educator, railroad official and member of the Society of Friends. He was born on April 25, 1812 at the Goose Creek Meeting House in Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of Thomas J. and Mary (Taylor) Janney. After his father died May 1812, Janney attended Friends School at the Goose Creek Meeting House from 1818-1827, then attended day school at Alexandria in 1832 and was removed to Warren County, Ohio in 1833. From 1833-1847, he was engaged in teaching a country and village school, in land surveying and with a short experiment in a village store, during which time he married Rebecca A. Smith in 1838. During the winter months he served as a clerk in the Ohio House of Representatives (1844-1847); chief clerk in the office of the Ohio secretary of state and the commissioner of common schools (1847-1851); secretary of Board of Control of the State Bank of Ohio (1851-1865); assistant postmaster of Columbus, Ohio, (1865-1866); and secretary and treasurer of Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad Company (1866-1881). He died on December 11, 1907 and is buried in Columbus, Ohio.
