From 1851 to 1855 he worked as a mercenary in the second Swiss regiment in the service of the King of Sicily, and he remained in the infantry of the canton of Schwyz from 1869 to 1872. In 1857, he married Elizabeth Mechler, 1838-1916. In 1873, Kafader and his wife emigrated from Switzerland and settled in Terre Haute, Indiana. Having worked as a grocer in Siebnen, Switzerland, Kafader established his own business in Terre Haute: E. Kafader Grocery and Saloon. The store remained in operation through the 1890's. Kafader died on January 16, 1917 and is buried in Terre Haute.
