Background

Biographical / Historical:

Charles Samuel Keene, 1823-1891, was a humorous artist for the periodical Punch from 1851-1890. He was born on August 10, 1823 in Hornsey, Middlesex, England. After showing artistic talent as a teenager, he was apprenticed to a wood engraver from 1842 to 1847. He then made drawings for the Illustrated London News before making his first appearance in Punch in 1851. In addition to his work for Punch, Keene contributed his drawings to the periodical Once a Week, beginning in 1859. His most notable work included a series of illustrations for Charles Reade's A Good Fight (also known as The Cloister and the Hearth) and for George Meredith's Evan Harrington. In 1881 a volume of his Punch drawings was published as Our People. Keene died on January 4, 1891 in London.

Scope and Content:

The letters are for the most part undated, but those which carry dates fall within the years 1880-1890. Thirty-one are addressed to Sir Francis Cowley Burnand, 1836-1917, playwright, author, and editor of Punch; one to George Price Boyce, 1826-1897, landscape painter; one to Charles William Shirley Brooks, 1816-1874, editor of Punch; one to Alfred Cooper, artist; and eleven to less famous individuals. The letters to Sir Francis Cowley Burnand and the one to Charles William Shirley Brooks relate to drawings; the others refer to books given and lent to Keene, to invitations, and to an exchange of bookplates.
