Background

Biographical / Historical:

Richard Kennedy, 1910-1989, was a British artist and illustrator. He was born on April 9, 1910 in Cambridge, England. When he was sixteen years old, Kennedy became apprenticed to the Hogarth Press run by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. His duties at the press included packaging books for distribution, assisting with printing, selling books, and designing book covers and dust jackets. His artwork was used in at least twenty-four books produced by the press. After leaving the press, Kennedy became a successful book illustrator, illustrating works by Eilís Dillon, Rosemary Sutcliff, and Astrid Lindgren. In 1972, he published an illustrated memoir, A Boy at the Hogarth Press, about his time working with the Woolfs. Kennedy died on February 11, 1989.

Two of the lithographs are framed: "Virginia setting type" and "Virginia's Portrait." The other two, in mats but not frames, are titled "Four Reflections of Virginia" and "Virginia Writing."
