Background

Biographical / Historical:

Hunter Southworth Kimbrough, 1900-1994, was a bond salesman and the brother of Upton Beall Sinclair's second wife, Mary Craig (Kimbrough) Sinclair, 1882-1961. He was born on September 15, 1900 in Greenwood, Mississippi. After meeting Sinclair at the age of 13, he enjoyed a long personal relationship with the author. The pair were arrested together in 1923 for demonstrating at Liberty Hill in Los Angeles, California. Kimbrough was also involved, along with his sister and Sinclair, in the production of Sergei Eisenstein's ultimately unfinished film ¡Que viva México!. He died on August 27, 1994.

Scope and Content:

The Kimbrough mss., 1961-1967, consists of letters to and from bond salesman Hunter Southworth Kimbrough, 1900-1994, concerning his relationship with his brother-in-law, Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968. The items in this collection chronicle the final years of that relationship, especially the misunderstandings between Kimbrough and Sinclair in regard to certain financial matters.

Additional correspondents in this collection are John Kenneth Cameron, Ranney Clark Draper, and Frederick Hard. A series of annotations written by Kimbrough as late as 1989 that further explain the nature of the misunderstandings between the two complete the collection.
