Background

Biographical / Historical:

Langer was born in New York City and took his degrees at New York University. He joined the Indiana University physics faculty in 1938, and served as chairman of the Physics Department from 1966-1973. He worked at Los Alamos on the Atomic Bomb (Manhattan) sProject, 1943-1945, and as a consultant to the Atomic Energy Commission from 1948-1961. He became chair of the Indiana University physics department in 1965 and established the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center as part of the National Science Foundation development program. Langer retired in 1979 and resided in Bloomington, Indiana, until his death on January 17, 2000.

Scope and Content:

A few papers of former Physics Department Chairman Allan C. G. Mitchell, 1902-1963, are present in the collection, as well as a set of glass slides of Hiroshima taken after the dropping of the atomic bomb.
