Background

Biographical / Historical:

Laura Mooney Long, 1892-1967, was an American historian and author of children's books. She was born in Columbus, Indiana on August 4, 1892, the daughter of Edmund and Laura Henley Mooney. She studied at St. Joseph College in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, as well as Indiana University and Michigan Agricultural College. She married attorney Philip R. Long in 1916. They lived in Montana for several years before settling in Columbus, Indiana around 1920. Inspired by the stories she would tell her two children, Laura became a successful author of children's books. She published her first book, Hannah Courageous, in 1939, which explored the history of Quakers in Indiana and American slavery. She would go on to write several more books based on the lives of heroic men and women. Her last book, John Peter Zenger, Defender of a Free Press, was published in 1966. She also wrote a weekly historical column in The Evening Republican titled "Horse and Buggy Days" from 1953 to 1965. She died in Indianapolis on March 28, 1967.
