Background

Biographical / Historical:

William Darnall MacClintock, 1858-1936, was an American English professor. He was born on July 28, 1858 in Elizaville, Kentucky, the son of Alexander and Cornelia (Darnall) MacClintock. He received his A.B. from Kentucky Wesleyan in 1878, and A.M. from Johns Hopkins University in 1882. In 1886, he married Lucia Porter Lander. They had four children: Lander, Paul, Hilda, and Elizabeth. From 1892 to 1925, MacClintock was professor of English at the University of Chicago, and was appointed professor emeritus in 1925. In 1908 and 1912, MacClintock was sent by the University of Chicago and the U.S. government to lecture to American teachers in the Philippines and to study educational conditions there. He kept a travel diary of the trips in the form of letters to his wife and children. On both trips he sailed from San Francisco via Hawaii and Japan to the Philippines, stopping in China on the return trip. From September 11, 1927 to April 24, 1928 he and Julia MacClintock spent the winter touring Europe, visiting England, France, Italy, Austria and Germany. He again kept a travel diary in the form of letters to his children. William MacClintock died on April 21, 1936 and is buried in Lexington, Kentucky.
