Background

Biographical / Historical:

Rufus Magee, 1845-1929, was a lawyer, Indiana state senator, and diplomat. He was born on October 17, 1845 in Logansport, Indiana. He studied at Indiana University before becoming the Managing Editor for the Indianapolis Herald in 1865 and the City Editor for the Indianapolis Sentinel the following year. In 1869, he acquired the Logansport Pharos newspaper, and he served as its editor until 1876. Magee's political career began in 1883 when he served the first of two terms as an Indiana state senator. He is best known for serving as the United States Minister to Norway and Sweden from 1885 to 1889. He married Maria Jane (Mussleman) Magee, 1845-1886, and their daughter Margaret Magee was born on November 8, 1869. Rufus Magee died on April 25, 1929.

Scope and Content:

The Magee mss. are papers of Rufus Magee, 1845-1929. They consist of an undated typewritten copy of a newspaper article, "An Indian Summer Day," by Rufus Magee, under the pseudonym "A Ruralist"; a printed copy of his Indiana Senate bill no. 275, A bill for an act to regulate the employment of officers and persons in the service to the state in benevolent institutions in the state, 1891; and a letter regarding the above bill from Robert S. Justice, member of the Indiana House of Representatives from Carroll and Cass counties, to Miss Margaret Magee, Logansport, Indiana, October 8, 1951.
