Background

Biographical / Historical:

Grace Sutherlin Marks, 1882-1953, was a resident of Salem, Indiana. She was born on August 15, 1882 to John Sutherlin and his wife Eugenia Woodward Sutherlin. She trained to be a teacher at the Indiana State Normal School (now known as Indiana State University). After graduating around 1905, Grace taught English and Eighth Grade at Salem High School in Salem, Indiana. On March 30, 1907 she married William Oliver Marks, an abstractor and attorney. They had two children: Martha Marks Cavanaugh and Matthew Oliver Marks. Grace marks died in 1953 and is buried in Salem, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

The materials in the collection relate to roads in South Central Indiana (including Brown, Clark, Crawford, Dubois, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Lawrence, Orange, Perry, Ripley, Scott, and Washington Counties) and the people, particularly the early settlers, who lived along them.

The collection has been kept in the order in which Mrs. Marks arranged it. It consists of one box of correspondence; eleven boxes of notes, maps, pictures, clippings, etc., in an alphabetical subject arrangement in manila folders; four card file boxes of notes on cards in an alphabetical subject arrangement; one box of notebooks; one box of plates for pictures; and one oversize folio of larger maps.
