Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Dale Messick, 1906-2005, was a cartoonist and author of the Brenda Starr, Reporter comic strip from South Bend, Indiana.
- Scope and Content:
The first group of ninety-two drawings done in 1946 are for the daily strip and recount the story of "Trash Alley." The second group of twelve strips, 1947, are the Sunday comic pages and relate to the story of "Haelo Angel." Each strip is dated with month and day and carries a date received stamp on verso for the Chicago Tribune Engraving Department. Many of the strips also have the Chicago Tribune copyright label.
Additional drawings consist of 150 panels for the daily strip, May 30-Dec. 12, 1955 and Jan. 3-Sept. 30, 1966.
Additional drawings consist of 456 panels for the daily strip, Nov. 7, 1957, July-Dec. 1963, Jan. 1-4, 1964, and Jan.-Dec. 1978.
Additional drawings consist of 100 panels for the daily strip, Jan.-Dec. 1955, 42 panels for Feb.-Dec. 1956, 152 panels for Jan.-Nov. 1957, and 122 panels for Jan.-Oct. 1, 1977. All stories are incomplete.
