Background

Biographical / Historical:

Henry Miller, 1891-1980, was a writer known for developing a semi-autobiographical novel form that incorporated surrealism, mysticism, social criticism, and other elements.

Scope and Content:

The Miller, H. mss II, 1951-1952 and 1955, consists primarily of correspondence between author Henry Miller, 1891-1980, and his fourth wife, Eve McClure, 1922-1966. Also present are a few letters to Miller from: members of McClure's family; Miller's third wife, Lepska Miller; librarian and dean of the UCLA library school, Andrew H. Horn, 1914-1983; and artist Abraham S. Weiner, 1897-1982.

The Miller-McClure correspondence begins with introductory letters where they comment on Miller's books, his children, and people they know in common. Later letters are love letters leading up to Eve's moving in with Henry in April and their subsequent marriage in December 1953.
