Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Paul Nettl, 1889-1972, musicologist, was born in Hohenelbe, Bohemia. He studied first law (1913) and then musicology (1915) at German University in Prague, and would go on to lecture in musicology there from 1919 to 1939. Nettl was Jewish and fled Prague after the German occupation in 1939. He and his family immigrated to the United States, living first in Princeton, New Jersey, where Nettl taught at Westminster Choir College, and then settling in Bloomington, Indiana, where Nettl taught musicology at Indiana University from 1946 until 1960.

The Nettl mss., 1927-1967, consist of letters of Paul Nettl, 1889-1972, musicologist, during his residence at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey, and at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. The letters, from composers, musicians and musicologists in the United States and Europe, concern mutual friends, musical works and research, published and in preparation. Included are letters of recommendation for Nettl from Guido Adler, Alfred Einstein and Georg Szell.
