Background

Biographical / Historical:

James B. Nickerson was born December 14, 1832 in Clinton County, Ohio. During the Civil War, he fought in Company B, 40th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. In 1865, he married Mary (McEwen) Nickerson, 1837-1913, and together they would have one daughter, Martha (Nickerson) Schofield, 1868-1958. Federal census records indicate that the family had moved to Indiana by 1880. In 1884, Nickerson received his teaching license, valid in Blackford County, Indiana. Nickerson died in 1907 and was buried in Clearwater, Kansas.

The Nickerson mss., 1863-1884, consist of a Civil War diary of James B. Nickerson, 1832-1907, educator, company B, 40th regiment, Ohio infantry, which comments also on the 84th regiment, Indiana infantry; a letter from George Henry La Fetra, 1869; and a teacher's license valid in Blackford County, Indiana, 1884.
