Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Eduard Ochsner was a member of the First Cavalry of Wisconsin, which was mustered into service in Camp Fremont at Ripon and later in Camp Harvey, Kenosha, in 1861. The regiment left the state of Wisconsin in March, 1862, proceeding to St. Louis, Missouri. In the following months, the First Cavalry participated in several military actions in the states of Missouri and Arkansas. Ochsner was killed in the skirmish at L'Anguille Ferry, Arkansas on August 3, 1862.
- Scope and Content:
The Ochsner mss., 1862, consist of letters from Eduard Ochsner, Wisconsin millworker, to his brother Henry, also living in Wisconsin, during Eduard's period of service in the Civil War with the Union forces. The letters are written in German.
Eduard Ochsner is basically concerned about his family, the non-functioning of the postal service, and the health condition of his fellow soldiers. His reasons for joining the army, a comparison of Northern and Southern military equipment, and some military actions in Arkansas in the summer of 1862 are also mentioned.
Also present is an envelope without letter, postmarked Dec. 1861, and typed transcriptions of the letters, prepared by the collection cataloguer in January 1994.
