Background

Biographical / Historical:

Jan Opočenský, 1885-1961, was a Czech archivist, historian, and diplomat. He studied history and philosophy at Charles University in Prague and passed the archiving and librarianship exam at the Austrian Institute of Historical Research in Vienna. He began working at the Governor's Archive in Prague in 1910. In 1918, after the dissolution of the Austo-Hungarian Empire, he worked on the separation of the Austrian-Czechoslovak archives at the Ministry of the Interior. From 1920-1935, he served as an archivist for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1936, his career shifted to diplomacy, and he was appointed the Czechoslovak General Consul in Paris under President Edvard Beneš. Opočenský was recalled to Prague in 1938 after the Munich Agreement, and he fled into exile in the summer of 1939. During the Second World War, Opočenský served as Beneš's archivist for the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in England. After the war, Opočenský worked as Czechoslovak delegate at UNESCO from 1946 to 1948. He left Czechoslovakia permanently after the Communist takeover in 1948, settling in Paris, where he died in 1961.
