Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Parkin mss., 1900-1928 contains the correspondence of British ornithologist Thomas Parkin. Parkin studied at Rugby and Trinity College. After 1874, he then become one of the founding members of the Hastings & St. Leonards Natural History Society, and later its first president. He is known for his work in ornithology: in particular, his 1887 trip through Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania to collect sea birds. Parkin also traveled through North Africa, Spain, and America.

Scope and Content:

The correspondence deals chiefly with ornithological matters, but other subjects are discussed which include World War I, British occupation of India and a tablet to the memory of Matilda Barbara Betham Edwards, 1836-1919, poet and novelist, on Villa Julia, High Wickham, Hastings, 1919-1921.
