Background

Biographical / Historical:

James Whitcomb Riley, 1849-1916, was an Indiana poet known for his children's poetry and works in dialect.

Scope and Content:

The collection has been divided into three sections:

[1] Writings, consisting principally of manuscripts of poems, but also including some speeches, lectures and other prose. See the Manuscripts Catalog for individual cards describing the writings. In cataloging poems, the titles under which they have been published have been used in preference to the titles on the manuscripts.

[2] Correspondence: Most of the correspondence is with friends among whom are poets, novelists, journalists, actors, actresses, musicians, educators, lawyers, physicians, and artists. There are also some family letters and letters to and from editors, publishers, and lecture tour managers. The letters relate largely to Riley's writings, particularly their publication in periodicals, newspapers, or in book form, and to lecture and recital tours.
