Background

Biographical / Historical:

J. Albert Robbins, 1914-1992, was a professor of English at Indiana University for thirty-five years with an interest in American literature and bibliography.

"Three Centuries of American Poetry: An Exhibition of Original Printings" was shown in the main gallery of the Lilly Library in 1965.

Scope and Content:

The Robbins mss., 1964-1972, consist of correspondence of Indiana University Professor of English J. Albert Robbins, 1914-1992, with poets Robert Fitzgerald and Louis Untermeyer, concerning an American poetry exhibition in the Lilly Library. Other correspondence concerns attempts to obtain a copy of J. Gordon Coogler's Purely Original Verse (Columbia, SC, 1897) for inclusion in the exhibition.

Other correspondents include Irvin Ehrenpreis and Tillie Olsen, the latter writing in response to a survey of living American authors that Robbins was conducting for the Modern Language Association in 1972, preparatory to compiling the volume American Literary Manuscripts (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1977).

Also present in the collection is a small file of papers and letters, 1909-1914, of the Boisselet family of Paris, France, relatives of Simone Robbins, widow of Professor Robbins. Correspondents in this portion include Jules Lermina, Jules Troubat, and Alexandrine Méley Zola. Four photographs of Jules Troubat, one of an unidentified older couple, and one of the Boisselet's country house at Aulnay-s.-Bois, along with a clipping from The National Financial News about Simone Robbins's godfather, Colonel Simon Godchot, complete the collection.
