Background

Biographical / Historical:

Frank C. Senour, 1871-1928, was born in New Augusta, Indiana, on 15 December 1871. He completed his AB in Engish at Indiana University in 1911 and his AM there in 1913. He taught English at IU from 1911 to 1928. He died in Indianapolis, Indiana, on 2 November 1928.

Ruth Athenais Norman Halls, 1898-1990, was born on 7 December 1898 in Barlettville, Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University in 1919 with an AB in English. After graduation, Halls taught Latin to Indiana high school students and began a long-term correspondence with Senour, who had been one of her professors. In 1921, she started working for Scott Foresman, a textbook publisher in Chicago. When she died on 23 December 1990, Halls left her $11 million estate to Indiana University's College of Arts and Sciences.

Scope and Content:

The Senour mss., 1919-1928, consists of letters from Professor of English Frank C. Senour, 1871-1928, to Indiana University alumna and benefactor Ruth Athenais Norman Halls, 1898-1990. In these letters, Senour discusses his own activities and health, events occurring on campus and in Bloomington, and offers frequent advice and comments about Halls' life.

A typed transcript, made by the recipient but omitting all identifiable names and locales, accompanies the letters. A photograph of Frank Senour and a copy of a posthumously published article by him - "The case of Professor Snedden" - complete the collection.
