Background

Biographical / Historical:

Mary Craig Kimbrough Sinclair wrote poems and novels strongly influenced by her Southern background, along with numerous articles and essays on various issues. She married author Upton Beall Sinclair in 1913 and collaborated with him throughout her life. Born into one of the oldest Mississippi families, Mary Sinclair wrote many works based on her life and experiences in the southern United States. Works such as Queen of a Mystic Court and The Romance History of Winnie Davis are representative examples of this characteristic. As an active writer, a member of an elite Southern family, and the wife of Upton Sinclair, Mary Sinclair also had close friendships with many important political, cultural, and literary figures, including the Davis family and poet George Sterling. Her connections are well reflected in the vast amount of correspondence in the collection that she exchanged with well-known persons of the time.

Scope and Content:

Correspondence and Personal includes a variety of biographical materials such as correspondence, business and financial documents, and materials on Mary Sinclair's genealogy. Writings encompasses the wide range of her literary works in novels, poetry, and criticism, including both major texts and miscellaneous writings.
