- Biographical / Historical:
Born in Los Angeles September 15, 1936, Donald Lee Singer started his career as a teacher. Later he became an administrator in the California community college system and served as president of two community colleges. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Education, an M.A. in History and a Ph.D. in Higher Education, all from the University of Southern California. Singer acquired the materials in the collection while doing research for his M.A. thesis on Sinclair.
Upton Sinclair, 1878-1968, was a novelist and civil liberties advocate.

The Singer, D. mss., 1948-1965, consist of letters and notes to, from, and about author Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, collected by educator Donald Lee Singer, 1936-.
The 1948 and 1954 correspondence in the collection concerns invitations to Sinclair to appear as a speaker at fund-raising events of the Southern California Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union, of which Sinclair was a founder. In both instances he tendered his regrets but in 1954 did send along "some word of greeting" which he requested be read to the banquet guests. The 1960s correspondence concerns Singer's attempts to interview Sinclair about his 1934 run for governor of California on the campaign platform known as EPIC - End Poverty In California.
Correspondents in the collection are Aaron Allen Heist, Eason Monroe, and Upton Sinclair.
An inscribed copy of the Lilly Library's 1963 exhibition catalog "... The Upton Sinclair Archives," and copies of two published articles by Singer about Sinclair's 1934 gubernatorial race in California complete the collection.
