Background

Biographical / Historical:

Kate A. Thompson was a granddaughter of Sarah Shipley Mitchell, who was a first cousin of Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln.

After her retirement as a teacher at Manual Training High School in Indianapolis, Thompson became interested in tracing her family's history with a view particularly of proving the legitimacy of Nancy Hanks. She travelled in Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, searching for records of the Thompson, Mitchell, Shipley, Hanks, Berry, and related families.

Scope and Content:

The Thompson, K.A. mss., 1874-1932, consist in the main of 20 notebooks made by Kate A. Thompson, 1855?-1942, between 1918 and 1926, following her retirement as a teacher at Manual Training High School in Indianapolis. These notebooks contain the notes she assembled concerning her family's history in relation to Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln.

The collection also contains some correspondence, 1874- 1932; a genealogical chart of the descendants of David McCord and Ann Shipley; some tracings of signatures; a copy of "Shipley, Mitchell, and Thompson families, notes based in part on researches of Kate A. Thompson, compiled by Stith Thompson ..." Bloomington, 1964 (mimeographed), transferred to Book Department (Lilly CS71 .T476); a letter from Stith Thompson to Robert A. Miller, March 7, 1964, containing preliminary remarks on the collection, and explaining the reason for Miss Thompson's investigations and how she proceeded; and some printed material.
