Career: born, November 17, 1883, Loogootee, Indiana; son of James Donnelly Treanor, 1849-1926, and Gertrude (Sommers) Treanor, -1919; graduated from Petersburg, Indiana, High School, 1901; teacher and administrator, public school system, Petersburg, Indiana, 1902-1917; married Elma Frank, -1914, on April 16, 1906; married Aline Elizabeth Jean, December 9, 1916; A.B., 1912, LL.B., 1922, J.D., 1923, LL.D., 1939, Indiana University; S.J.S., Harvard, 1927; U.S. Army, August, 1917-June, 1919 (discharged as 2nd lieutenant, 325th Field artillery); daughter, Rosemary, born 1920; member of the faculty, Indiana University Law School, 1922-1930; judge, Indiana Supreme Court, 1930-1938; member, Circuit Court of Appeals, Chicago, 1938-1941; died April 27, 1941; Democrat, member, Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Sigma Rho, Gamma Eta Gamma, Order of Coif.

Scope and Content:

The letters and papers in this collection consist of school and college exercises, papers and grade cards, 1899- 1912; World War I letters from Lt. Treanor to his wife and miscellaneous military orders, etc.; letters from Treanor to his wife, April-August, 1920, while he was a student in the Indiana University Law School; mimeographed and typewritten material for classes in Roman law, 1926-1927, legal history, 1926-1928, jurisprudence, and the law of persons, property, and obligations, presumably from the Harvard University Law School; other law school outlines, notes, etc.; Indiana University Law School and Indiana Law Journal correspondence, chiefly for 1928-1930; letters, 1927-1930, relating to the financing of the house of the Indiana University chapter of Gamma Eta Gamma; correspondence of the Indiana University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, 1928-1929, at which time Treanor was its secretary; political correspondence of Treanor's campaign for nomination and election as judge of the Indiana Supreme Court, 1930; correspondence and notes relating to the Indiana joint and consolidated schools survey commission of which Treanor was a member in 1930; miscellaneous programs, invitations, pictures and clippings; and letters, telegrams, and cards of condolence on Treanor's death.

The first two folders in the collection and a scrapbook contain biographical and genealogical material concerning Judge Treanor.

Among the writers of letters are: Evan Alfred Evans, Felix Frankfurter, Sherman Minton, Meredith Nicholson, R. Earl Peters, Julian Craven Ralston, and Albert Stump.

Note on Indexing Term - "Indiana University": Treanor was a professor of law and judge. IU law school and Indiana Law Journal correspondence chiefly for the years 1928-1930.
