Background

Biographical / Historical:

Walter N. Eastburn was a member of The Manuscript Society and served as its secretary from 1955 to 1961. Eastburn attended the first annual meeting of the Society at the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1948 which began as the National Society of Autograph Collectors. Though possessed of modest resources, he was a notable collector. Among his collections were a complete set of Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Signers of the Federal Constitution, and Signers of the Israeli Declaration of Independence, a remarkable feat for one with no particular ties to that modern state. He died on June 13, 1965.

Scope and Content:

Subjects covered in the letters include the Aroostook Railroad Company, income tax, politics in Maine and Minnesota, Pittsburgh and New Alexandria Turnpike Company, War of 1812, and the Whig party in New York and Ohio.
