Background

Biographical / Historical:

John William "Will" Vawter, 1871-1941, was an Indiana artist and illustrator who was a member of the Brown County School of artists. He was born in Boone County, West Virginia on April 13, 1871. When he was six years old, his family moved to Greenfield, Indiana. While living there, he met and developed a relationship with poet James Whitcomb Riley, who also lived in Greenfield. Vawter's first commercial artwork was done for various newspapers and magazines, such as the Indianapolis Sentinel and Life. However, he is best known for illustrating many of James Whitcomb Riley's books of poetry. In 1908, Vawter moved to Nashville, Indiana to join the Brown County Art Colony. His impressionistic paintings often featured local landscapes and residents in Brown County, and his work frequently won prizes when it was exhibited at the Hoosier Salon and the Brown County Art Gallery Association. Will Vawter died on February 11, 1941 in Nashville, Indiana.
