Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Wain, 1925-1994, was an English novelist, poet, and critic associated with both the "Angry Young Men" and "The Movement." After attending Newcastle-under-Lyme High School, he entered St. John's College, Oxford, receiving his B.A. in 1946 and M.A. in 1950. While at Oxford, Wain was tutored by C.S. Lewis, but Wain did not share Lewis' taste for fantasy and science fiction. Instead, his work falls within the genre of modern realism. He published his first novel, Hurry on Down, in 1953. Other notable works include Strike the Father Dead (1962) and Young Shoulders (1982). Wain also published several collections of his own poetry and critical works on Arnold Bennett, Samuel Johnson, and Shakespeare. In 1973, he became the Professor of Poetry at Oxford, and in 1985 he was made an honorary fellow of St. John's College. He died in Oxford on May 24, 1994.
