Background

Biographical / Historical:

Alexander Stewart Webb, 1835-1911, was an educator and a Union general in the US Civil War. He was born on February 15, 1835 in New York City. After graduating from West Point in 1855, he was sent to Florida to fight in the Third Seminole War. He then returned to West Point to serve as a mathematics instructor. During the Civil War he held many positions and played a large role in the Battle of Gettysburg. Given command of the 2nd Brigade of John Gibbon's 2nd Division just before the battle, Webb was wounded defending against Pickett's Charge. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg and went on to fight in several more battles, including the Battle of Spotsylvania in 1864 where he was seriously wounded. He returned to duty on January 11, 1865 as the chief of staff for the Army of the Potomac. After the war Webb served as lieutenant colonel in the infantry and returned to teaching at West Point. In 1870 he left the army in order to serve as president of the City College of New York, a position he held for 33 years. Webb died in Riverdale, New York on February 12, 1911 and is buried at West Point.
