Background

Biographical / Historical:

William C. Weeks, 1839-1893, was a soldier from Allegan, Michigan. He was born in Allegan on January 13, 1839, the son of Alanson S. Weeks and Harriett N. Peckham. In 1862, Weeks enlisted as a private in the Union Army and was assigned to Company I of the 5th Michigan Cavalry. While serving in the army, Weeks was promoted to first lieutenant. At the Battle of Five Forks, he was severely wounded, resulting in the loss of his foot. After the war, he returned to Allegan, Michigan where he worked in the real estate business and was elected village president in 1876. William Weeks died on December 25, 1893.

Harrison Samuel Weeks, 1844-1892, was William Weeks' brother and an army officer. He graduated from West Point on June 15, 1868 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 8th United States Cavalry. He was stationed at Fort Union, New Mexico for a time and spent the majority of his military career in the West. He was promoted to first lieutenant on December 28, 1871 and was made a captain on April 4, 1885. Weeks died on January 22, 1892.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of both the Civil War and post-Civil War correspondence of William C. Weeks and Harrison Samuel Weeks, as well as correspondence with other relatives and friends.

The collection also includes some personal papers of both William and Harrison Weeks.
