Biographical / Historical:

Elmer Otto Wooley, 1883-1964, was born in Flora, Indiana; graduated from Indiana University in 1907; studied for one year at the University of Leipzig before returning to the United States and Harvard University where he was awarded a Master's degree in 1913 and then a PhD from Indiana University in 1915. He began teaching at Denison University as an instructor in German, returned to Bloomington in 1922 to teach German at Bloomington High School, and in 1930 joined the IU German Department as Assistant Professor. He retired from Indiana University in 1954 and continued tutoring students in German until his death in 1964.

The Wooley, E. mss., 1913-1964, consist primarily of letters to Indiana University Professor of German, Elmer Otto Wooley, 1883-1964. Correspondents in the collection include: John William Ashton, Clifford Albrecht Bernd, William Lowe Bryan, Heinrich Clasen, Frederick Carl Domroese, Howard Preston French, Frank Thomson Gucker, Carl Laage, Thomas Mann, Johannes Meyer, Douglas Day Nye, Friedrich Ernst Peters, Walter Albert Reichart, Frank Glessner Ryder, George August Christian Scherer, George Schulz–Behrend, Donald Arthur Smalley, Elvis Jacob Stahr, Franz Stuckert, Herman B Wells, Oscar Osborn Winther, James Aiken Work, Maria (Brüll) Wrede, and Adolf Edward Zucker. Several of the letters are in German and many of them reflect Wooley's life-long interest in the life and work of Theodor Storm.

Other items in the collection include an undated letter draft from Wooley to Thomas Mann, Wooley's 1913 grades at Harvard, a Jan. 12, 1929 receipt to Wooley for a lifetime membership in The Modern Language Association of America, and two news clippings concerning Wooley's academic life (June 30, 1954) and scholarly research (July 2, 1954).
