Background

Biographical / Historical:

Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) was an American writer and poet. Plath was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was educated at Smith College (MA) and Newnham College (Cambridge), the latter on a Fulbright Fellowship. While in England, Plath met and married Ted Hughes. Plath returned to the United States in 1957 to teach at Smith College with Hughes, who taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Plath and Hughes returned to England in 1959 where they remained until Plath's death in 1963.

Plath's mother, Aurelia Schober Plath, was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Austrian parents. Schober Plath frequently wrote letters to her daughter, many of which she edited and published in the book Letters Home: Correspondence 1950-1963 (Harper & Row, 1975). Schober Plath died March 11, 1994.

Scope and Content:

The Plath mss. IX, ca. 1972-2012, consists of correspondence between Aurelia Plath (Sylvia Plath's mother) and Olive Clifford Eaton (a neighbor in Winthrop, MA), Mary Alice Ericson (Olive Eaton's daughter), and Margery DeLerno (Olive Eaton's daughter). The collection also includes the manila envelope in which Manuel J. DeLerno sent the 6 letters to the Lilly Library.
