- Biographical / Historical:
Herbert Ernest Bates (H.E. Bates) was a renowned English author of short stories and novels. His best-known works include Love for Lydia, The Darling Buds of May, My Uncle Silas, Fair Stood the Wind for France, and The Scarlet Sword. Many of his stories portray rural life in the English Midlands, particularly Northamptonshire, where Bates grew up. Some of Bates' work was adapted for film and television, including The Purple Plain and The Darling Buds of May (adapted as The Mating Game). Bates was also a gardener and wrote many books on flowers.
