Background

Biographical / Historical:

Davies Batterton was born on February 16, 1823, in Bloomington, Indiana. Andrew Wylie, 1789-1851, the first president of Indiana University, was one of Batterton's professors at IU. After graduating from IU in 1848, Batterton moved to Greensburg, Indiana, where he served as the principal of Decatur County Seminary. In 1851, he helped start the Decatur Clarion, which he edited for several years. He opened a drug store in downtown Greensburg in 1852. In 1856, he represented Decatur County in the Indiana State Legislature. He died on April 19, 1860, in Greensburg, Indiana.

This collection consists of 3 photographs, a testimonial from Andrew Wylie, and the diploma granted to Davies Batterton from Indiana University in 1848.
