Background

Biographical / Historical:

Enos Hadley, 1825-1893, was born on 10 June 1825 near Plainfield, Indiana, to early settlers of Hendricks County. Raised on a frontier farm, he worked as a schoolteacher until he started his own farm in Washington Township. He was a Republican and was involved in local politics as a trustee and commissioner. On 14 November 1850, Hadley married Susan Smith, 1834-1911, whose Kentucky-born parents were also early settlers of Hendricks County. Her brother, William Smith, 1838-1864, of Danville, IN, was a First Lieutenant in the 53rd Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He was killed in action at the Battle of Atlanta on 22 July 1864. Smith's friend, E. Hunt (possibly Eleazer Hunt, 1834-1901, or Erastus Hunt, 1830-), was also a soldier in the Union Army and knew the Hadleys.

Scope and Content:

The Hadley, E. mss. consists of letters written to Enos Hadley of Hendricks County, Indiana, from friends and relatives fighting for the Union in the Civil War. Most of these letters were written 1862-1864. Prominent among the writers are William Smith, Hadley's brother-in-law, and E. Hunt, a friend. While most letters are addressed to Hadley, also included are letters addressed to Hadley's wife, Susan Hadley (from her brother, William), and letters addressed to other persons.

While most letters were written over a two-year period, the contents of this collection span 1861-1888.
