Background

Biographical / Historical:

Samuel P. Hains, 1810-1889, was born on 10 November 1810 in Union, Pennsylvania. He married Anna Mary Smith, 1813-1877, in 1832. In 1842, Hains took his family to Swan, Noble County, Indiana, where a friend had given him land to farm. In 1851, the Hains family returned to Pennsylvania for a visit but were back in Indiana by 1855. Hains died on 10 August 1889 and is buried in Hooper Cemetery in Avilla, Indiana.

The Hains mss., 1842-1851, consists of 11 letters written by Samuel P. Hains concerning his experiences in Indiana. The letters recount in great detail his experiences in Swan, Noble County, Indiana, near Fort Wayne.
