Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Payen-Payne mss., 1926-1932 contains cards and correspondence to translator Vincheles-Payen-Payne (1866-1945) from or relating to Scottish translator Charles Scott-Moncrieff (1889-1930). Born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, Moncrieff studied at Winchester College and later Edinburgh University. During World War I, Moncrieff served with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front, where he was injured and then disqualified from service. Later, Moncrieff became known for his translations of literary works: namely, Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, as well as several other works by Stendahl.
Moncrieff was somewhat familiar with translator Payen-Payne, whom he wrote to. Payen-Payne was more well-known, though, for collecting and translating French idioms.
