Background

Biographical / Historical:

George Vincent Higgins, 1939-1999, was an American writer, lawyer, columnist, and professor at Boston College and Boston University, with nearly 30 novels and many short stories published in various periodicals. He is known for an experimental, literary approach to crime fiction with a particular emphasis on realistic dialogue.

Higgins began his career in 1962 as a journalist for the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin, where he covered mafia battles and the statehouse. In 1967, he received his law degree from Boston College. From 1970 to 1973 he worked as assistant U.S. attorney. In 1972, Higgins published the commercially successful crime novel The Friends of Eddie Coyle. After the success of this novel, he devoted himself to writing, putting out roughly a book a year. At the same time, he also served as a journalist for Boston newspapers and The Wall Street Journal.

Scope and Content:

I. Correspondence includes the two subseries of letters: I. Higgins to Gilligan and II. Gilligan to Higgins. II. Writings includes various short works of Higgins, both fiction and nonfiction. III. Miscellaneous consists of all other items, including Higgins' CV, various periodicals with his published works, and various documents from his writing career.
