Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Holmans are a notable family in Indiana politics and governance. Pamela Dean Holman Harvey was born July 8, 1861 in Aurora, Indiana. Her grandfather, Jesse Lynch Holman, 1784-1842, served as prosecuting attorney of Dearborn County and as one of the first Justices on the Indiana Supreme Court. He also played a role in founding Indiana University, Franklin College, and the Indiana Historical Society. Pamela's father, William Steele Homan, 1822-1897, was a Dearborn County prosecuting attorney, a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, and a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1899, Pamela married Frederick Loviad Harvey, 1856-1923, in Washington, DC. The couple would have three children: Helen Holman Harvey, 1891-1892, Frederick Loviad Harvey, 1894-1973, and Abigail Holman Harvey Wood, 1899-1983. Abigail Holman Harvey, who was born in Washington, DC in 1899, would marry Colonel Eugene Villaret, 1888-1984. Together they had two children, Eugene Villaret, 1924-2000, and Armand Villaret, 1927-1986. After their divorce, Abigail Holman Harvey remarried Major General John Shirley Wood in 1957.

Scope and Content:

I. Correspondence contains the correspondence to and from various family members, most notably Pamela Dean Holman Harvey, Abigail Holman Harvey, Frederick Loviad Harvey, and Jesse Holman. II. Family documents contains biographical documents, insurance documents, and various other legal documents pertaining to members of the family. III. Clippings includes many newspaper clippings and various articles about the history of Indiana. IV. Photographs consists of photos of notable family members Pamela Dean Holman Harvey, Frederick Loviad Harvey, Abigail Holman Harvey, and other relatives. V. Miscellaneous contains other documents.
