Background

Biographical / Historical:

Charles Abraham Halleck was born in Rensselaer, Indiana in 1900. He received an A.B. degree in 1922 and a law degree in 1924, both from Indiana University. In 1934 the Republican candidate for the Second Congressional District died and a special election was called to fill the seat. Halleck won the nomination, was elected and continued to serve for an additional sixteen terms. He was the House Majority Leader from 1953 to 1955, but spent most of his career as minority leader. He was replaced by Gerald R. Ford in 1964, but remained in Congress until 1968 when he retired to Rensselaer to practice law and occasionally teach at Saint Joseph's College.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of programs, photographs, and a DVD related to ceremonies and services in honor of Halleck. Also included are photographs, clippings, and memorabilia related to Halleck's career as a congressman, including a pen which is noted as to having been used by LBJ to sign legislation.

The collection is arranged by content, including the Charles A. Halleck DVD, Clippings and Memorabilia, the Saturday Evening Post Magazine, and two folders of photographs, one for Halleck's memorial, the other containing various pictures related to Halleck.
