Jacob Neely served in Company C of the 22nd Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War; he was a 32nd degree Mason and served as postmaster of Morgantown, IN as well as an elected clerk of the Morgan Circuit Court. Jacob and Sarah Neely's home in Martinsville, IN was registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The Neelys were the maternal grandparents of Paul Vories McNutt, governor of Indiana and U.S. high commissioner to the Philippine Islands.
