Background

Biographical / Historical:

Born in Clay County, Virginia, on 15 January 1794, Noah Noble moved to Kentucky as a child and settled at Brookville, Indiana in 1816. He was elected sheriff of Franklin County in 1820, serving as a member of the Indiana General Assembly in 1824 and U. S. Receiver of Public Moneys at Indianapolis from 1826-1829. From 1831-1837, he served as governor of Indiana and was connected with the building of Michigan Road in 1830, becoming a member of the State Board of Internal Improvements in 1839. Noble died in Indianapolis on 8 February 1844.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of correspondence to members of the family of Noah Noble, especially to his son-in-law, Alexander H. Davidson, in relation to the settlement of Noah Noble's estate. Also included are shares of stock in the Indiana Internal Improvement loan; monthly financial returns of the U.S. Receiver of Public Moneys at Indianapolis, 1826-1829; deeds, 1816-1840; checks, notes, receipts and bills.

The first folder in the collection contains biographical and genealogical material on the Noble family.

Among the correspondents are George Hedford Dunn, Enoch D. John, John Lewis Ketcham, James Franklin Doughty Lanier, Marquis L. Smith, Omer Tousey and William H. Twining.
