Background

Biographical / Historical:

Lee Roy Norvelle, 1892-1984, was professor emeritus at Indiana University. Norvelle established the Indiana University Theatre, which he directed until his retirement in 1963, and served as Department of Speech and Theatre from 1945-1958. He helped to found the Brown County Playhouse in 1948 and produced, directed, and adapted Francesca Falk Miller's "Marked Corners" as Lincoln in Indiana for the Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of the producer's copy of the play "Lincoln in Indiana, 1816-1830," adapted by Lee Roy Norvelle, 1892-1984, professor of speech and theatre at Indiana University, from the play, Marked Corners, by Mrs. Francesca (Falk) Miller Nielsen, (Mrs. A. E. Nielsen), 1888- , and produced by Norvelle at the Indiana University Auditorium, February 21-22, 1959, under the auspices of the Indiana Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission; a copy of the printed play ... Marked Corners ... (Chicago, Americana House, 1954), carrying Norvelle's signature and annotations in his hand; correspondence, 1957-1959, with Mrs. Nielsen, members of the Indiana Lincoln Sesquicentennial Commission and others on the selection of a play for presentation as part of the sesquicentennial celebration, the adaptation of Mrs. Nielsen's play, and its casting; congratulatory letters received; press releases; photographs of the Indiana University production; and newspaper clippings, November 23, 1957-February 25, 1959, relating to the production.

Included in the collection among the production materials are: an undated copy of "Lincoln in Indiana condensed from the play Marked Corners by Francesca Falk Miller"; an undated copy of "Spencer County Collection: Abe's Poems, Favorite Songs and Ballads." Filed with the undated material are copies of some of the letters and speeches of Abraham Lincoln which have an Indiana connection, 1860-1861, including those speeches made while passing through Indiana, February 11-12, 1861.
