Background

Biographical / Historical:

Seymour S. Weiner was a Professor of French at various universities throughout Massachusetts and the East Coast. Weiner served as President of the Western Massachusetts chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). Professor Weiner wrote a biography, Francis Carco: The Career of a Literary Bohemian (1952).

Francis Carco (1886-1958) was born at Nouméa, New Caledonia and was a French novelist, poet, and dramatist. Among his most influencial works is his novel Jésus-la-Caille (1914), La Poésie (1919), and L'homme traqué (1922).

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of correspondence and material related to poet Francis Carco from the papers of Professor Seymour S. Weiner, who wrote a biography of Carco entitled Francis Carco: The Career of a Literary Bohemian, published in 1952. Also included is personal ephemera, such as Carco's birth certificate and early letters from Carco to friends. Photographs (loose and framed in cardboard), negatives, sheet music, journal articles, caricatures and sketches (some framed), and a handmade poetry book complete the collection.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged following original order besides Carco's Birth Certificate and Charles Melaye's "L'elian revu par Francis", which were originally the first and second items in the collection respectively.
