Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Friends of Liberia (FOL) was founded as a non-profit organization in 1986 by former Peace Corps volunteers and others who were interested in partnering with Liberians on development efforts. In the early 1990s, civil war began to spread throughout the country. At this time, FOL officer Jim Gray, a former Peace Corps volunteer, began to compile an e-mail distribution list of news stories, public service announcements, and other press materials, which he sent out several times a week.
- Scope and Content:
The Friends of Liberia Collection is divided into four series. The series are Education Projects, Government, Organization Material and Subject Files. The Education Projects series contains a large amount of school textbooks. There is also a folder regarding the Liberian Education Assistance Project, "LEAP," which includes DVDs and other items. Newspapers were removed from the collection and placed within the newspaper collection related to the LCP. A number of duplicate papers were also removed from the collection. An election observer vest was also removed from the collection and will be placed in the appropriate collection. Please contact the LCP for further information. Documents from John Gray were added to collection by Verlon Stone.
