Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Monroe County Historical Society was founded on 6 April 1905 and continues to exist today, albeit under a different name (Monroe County History Center) and with several periods of inactivity. According to former president and secretary James A. Woodburn, the Society had been inactive since the late 1910's, with Dr. Esarey as its last president; interest was reignited in 1954 for a couple of years, during which many of the materials present in the collection were presented at meetings and subsequently deposited at the Lilly Library. Many of the papers read at earlier meetings were likely lost in a house fire.

The collection consists of correspondence, papers, and memoirs about Monroe County. Many of the included papers were read before the Monroe County Historical Society during meetings.
